What is formula one motor racing?

This is the world's top rank type of motor racing. All the most important of the Grand Prix races are those between Formula One racing cars.

A Formula One racing car is low and wedge-shaped.The driver lies in a cockpit in front of the engine. This has a capacity of no more than 3 litres, or 1.5 litres if turbo-charged or super-charged. It may not have more than 12 cylinders. The five-or six speed gearbox lets the driver get the most power possible, whatever the speed of the car.

The car runs on broad, treadless tyres. These keep their grip with help from a wing-like aerofoil jutting up behind the engine.
Formula One cars can reach 320 kilometres an hour. The races are about 320 kilometres long. They are run on circuits with straight, fast stretches, and bends where driver must brake and accelerate hard.
